ABOUT THE AUTHOR
They say works of art are never finished--they are simply abandoned. While the manuscript for PB was 'finished' many years ago, it was not until fairly recently that I abandoned it. Or nearly did. However, one lucky day fate intervened. It happened on one of those writers' sites (where you talk about writing rather than write) in the person of my now good friend Pamela Kimmell, whose usual kindness has provided you with this link to me and my work. And you thought it was safe to go out into the woods with her... I had foolishly offered a sample of my novel ms to the writers' site regulars; the only time in my life I ever changed into a mooing heifer and jumped into a Brazilian river mad with snapping piranhas. Ouch! But one voice spoke wonderfully. It said she enjoyed my writing and wouldn't mind reading more. It was Pam. Gasp! My quivering lips ,numb with despair, faintly echoed her words aloud: a-n-d w-o-u-l-d-n-t m-i-n-d r-e-a-d-i-n-g m-o-r-e. Had the whole world gone insane? If so, perhaps my time still might come. Someone actually interested in "reading more"? Eventually Pam read the entire novel and loved it! Okay, she allowed it into her house. But she did read it, honest. She was supportive enough of my writing to arrange for her then literary agent to consider me. Consider yourself one of my new clients, her agent actually said. The book enjoyed a visit to Baen Books and Bantam-Dell-- which made me glad the saying goes "three strikes and you're out". But the editor at Dell did say s/he loved the novel's antagonist. My conclusion: next book--all antagonists. They say you can't judge a book by its cover. Heck, mine doesn't even have one. Not yet. Until it does, I thought I would make a simple website where I could share with others some extended samples of Project Brainfire. Please enjoy...
Brian Holland has written the novel Project Brainfire; a non-fiction book on an undisclosed topic; and a variety of poems and songs. Not to be confused with the Brian Holland of Holland-Dozier-Holland, songsmiths of great tunes such as Please Mister Postman. This Brian Holland lives in Alberta, Canada and his book has not been recorded by The Beatles. But his novel does explain why the Beatles came about. ABOUT THE BOOK
Gestapo overseer Herr Doctor Meister has extorted a leading German neurobiologist, Professor Schnell , into creating a bio-chemical substance capable of reprogramming the centers of the human brain that deal with partriotic and nationalistic functions. The perfected concoction will act as a carrier substance for the world vision of the Fuhrer, once it is bombarded with the vibrations of a recording of one of Hitler's frothy oratories. The newly developed V-2 rockets will carry the potent Reichedelic to the skies over England, where they will explode their mind-altering warheads--converting the British people to the vision of the Fuhrer without so much as a shot being fired. In order to test the Professor's developing chemical creation, a test subject of just the right genetic background must be employed. Enter the novel's protagonist, Pfc Harold Barton, a young Canadian serving in the US Army. Barton's days as a WWII combatant seemed over when he had lucked his way into possession of a large amount of contraband Nazi gold--stolen from a secret tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings by German SS officers in the novel's prologue. However, fate and Doctor Meister had other plans in store for him. Whisked away from the dusty heat of Italy in Meister's private plane to the luxurious hospitality of the Bavarian hideaway, Harold appears set to enjoy the life of Riley as a pampered POW. Unbeknownst to him, within days, Harold has already become the human guinea pig testing the Professor's latest chemical creations. In his first netherworld out-of-body reactions, Harold finds himself meeting face to face with the ancient Egyptian god Horus, who informs Harold that Horus had saved his life in battle so that he might find the gold the Nazis stole from the sacred tomb in Egypt, and re-consecrate it to the deity. Harold agrees to help, as best he can, then returns to his earthly body, remembering nothing of his nocturnal adventures. When three young Dutch girls are brought to the Bavarian retreat (for later genetic testing of the perfected chemicals), Harold meets Lisa, the eldest sister. The two soon find themselves sharing a blossoming love for each other and an instinctive mistrust of Meister, master of their seemingly innocent captivity. Together, they must solve the mystery of Project Brainfire before it is too late for them and for England. The link below offers a selection of chapters and excerpts from the novel.
